Sustainability & Beyond: rigorous knowledge for transformative futures

Knowledge must help repair, regenerate, and reimagine the world.

Sustainability can no longer be about making unsustainable systems less destructive, less extractive, or less unjust. In a world of climate disruption, biodiversity loss, inequality and injustice, democratic strain, technological upheaval, and geopolitical instability, “less bad” is not enough. The task now is to ask what comes after sustainability-as-usual: how societies can move towards regenerative practice, planetary repair, post-extractive economies and ways of living that remain within safe and just Earth system boundaries.

Sustainability & Beyond is the diamond open-access journal of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS). It is a home for rigorous, imaginative, transformative and future-oriented work that asks what sustainability means now, what it must become, and what may lie beyond it.

The journal publishes high-quality research and critical reflection across sustainability science, policy, practice, education, culture, and lived experience. We welcome empirical, theoretical, practice-oriented, methodological, artistic and experimental contributions that generate new knowledge, challenge established assumptions, and help societies navigate complexity, contestation and change.

We are especially interested in work that crosses boundaries: between disciplines, sectors, regions, knowledge systems, career stages and forms of communication. Articles may advance theory, inform policy, strengthen practice, test new methods, illuminate lived experience, or open fresh conversations about safe, just, thriving and regenerative futures.

Sustainability & Beyond embraces the traditions of scholarly excellence while creating space for new voices, formats and horizons of inquiry. We invite researchers, early-career scholars, practitioners, educators, policymakers, artists, communities and established thinkers to contribute as authors, reviewers, editors, collaborators and readers.
